It was morning, early morning. The sky was a light gray and there was a chill in the air. Cactusheart strode into camp with three fish hanging from his mouth. It had taken him awhile of waiting by a hole in the ice for him to catch them. He set the fish in the fresh-kill pile. Cactus heart padded over to the apprentices den. Most of them would be asleep as they needed their rest to grow, but it was time for his apprentice Sunpaw to train. Sun paw would need to get used to waking up early to go on patrols or help around camp so he decided to begin today's training session early. He had warned Sunpaw yesterday they'd be up early he just hoped he remembered and went to sleep early so he was fully awake to train. Cactusheart peered into the den. "Sunpaw!" he called loudly. All the apprentices shuffled and groaned in annoyance some covered their faces with their paws obviously quiet tired. "Time for training!" One apprentices hissed as he rolled back over to try and fall back asleep. Word Count: 185 Notes: - Tags: syd

It was a quiet morning in Creekclan territory, the cold weather leading to a lot of cats to remain inside and stay cozy. Sunpaw however, was awake and eager for another day of training. The young tom had woken up a few moments ago but was already wide-eyed and alert. He knew when it came to being a warrior, he would have to be ready for anything. He only had to wait for a little while before he heard his mentor, Cactusheart, call for him from outside of the den.
Sunpaw quickly stood up and headed out, scoffing at all of the other apprentices who were still asleep. Lazy he thought, as he remembered several of them requesting training for later in the day so they could sleep in. "Good morning Cactusheart," the apprentice nodded his head towards the warrior. Sunpaw respected him, even though the two sometimes would butt heads during training. Sunpaw was hoping for a quick session today, because even though he didn't want to admit it, the cold was not his favorite thing.

Cactusheart gave a small smirk. It was rare for Cactusheart to smile but to see Sunpaw shaping up so quickly under his teachings was something he couldn't help being at least slightly happy about. "Good to see you're awake." he said looking towards the other quiet lazy looking apprentices. He turned around padding off towards the Creek. "Let's get a move on Sunpaw!" he called. The border patrol hadn't yet been set out to check where the ice was thick or thin and apprentices weren't allowed out unless accompanied by a warrior. He would have Sunpaw check the ice, after all he'd need to learn some day or he may end up like Beewing. It had been countless moons since the corpse of the young warrior was found. She had been drowned fallen through the ice, since then many safety precautions were put into place. "Sunpaw. Before leaving camp, what is the first thing we do?" he asked very much expecting him to get it right away and ask if the ice had been checked yet. Word Count: 176 Notes: - Tags: syd

Sunpaw gave his mentor a respectful bow, hoping he was impressed that the apprentice had listened and gotten a good amount of sleep for their training. He padded swiftly along through camp, trying to the ignore the cold as best as possible. He was thankful for his coat, which was slightly thicker than some of his clan mates.
"Sunpaw. Before leaving camp, what is the first thing we do?" The ginger tom pondered for a second, remembering all of his training from the past month before settling on what he believed what was the correct answer. "Make sure that the ice is safe," he meowed somewhat confidently, "Or you'll end up like that one warrior." He wasn't alive when it had happened, but the stories always came up as leaf-bare approached until it was drilled into their heads. Someone didn't test the ice properly and fell through. Now it was mandatory to make sure it was safe to go out for the day. Sunpaw didn't mind, it was an easy duty, although not the most exciting to him.

"Yes, her name was Beewing." Cactusheart had very few memories of the she-cat and the ones he had of her were hazy. All he remembered clearly was her wet corpse being dragged into the center of camp, she was stiff very stiff and he was quickly ushered back into the nursery by the queens. Cactusheart put one of his front paws on the ice. He stomped hard feeling the vibrations through his paws. It felt very thick, considering the warmer weather. "Feel the ice." He turned to Sunpaw. "How many full-grown cats could fit on here before it broke?" Cactusheart would estimate about three to four right here but it'd differ across the stream. Checking the ice all the way across was key to crossing it. Word Count: 126 Notes: - Tags: syd

Sunpaw was glad to have a name to put to the warrior in the story. Now he could remind himself to never have himself or other cats of the clan to end up like poor Beewing.
"Feel the ice." Sunpaw nodded towards his mentor and gently put a paw on the cold surface. It felt pretty sturdy, especially for a larger cat like him. He glanced up across the stream, seeing if the ice looked similar all the way across. The only way to tell for sure would be to have the two cats to test it for themselves. "Maybe two or three? You can never really tell for sure, nature can be unpredictable." For once Sunpaw was a little unsure. He had never really gone out on the ice much before, but was eager to learn more about the process.

Cactus heart nodded. "Yes this ice could hold about two or three cats but, only one cat should cross at a time to be extra safe." he told Sunpaw. "You go first." he said gesturing towards the ice. He wanted to see if he could cross the ice on his own without slipping or falling. It wasn't hard to cross when you got the hang of it but a lot of apprentices have trouble the first few times crossing it. Cactus heart remembered his first time crossing the ice, he had slipped a bit and when trying to get back up one of his paws fell through the ice a warrior saw him falling from close by and quickly scooped him up. It felt like forever ago when he was a cheerful, carefree apprentice. He just hoped that he could do right by his clan and train Sunpaw to be the best warrior he could be. Sun paw had a long ways to go and they had many fighting techniques to learn and adjust, but for now he needed to learn how to cross the ice by himself. Word Count: 188 Notes: - Tags: syd

Sunpaw nodded, a little smirk on his face as he was proud that he was correct. However, his confidence was short lived when Cactusheart instructed him to cross the ice. The apprentice knew it was something he had to learn eventually, but he was still very nervous. He didn't want to fall in freeze like Beewing. That would be embarrassing, and he wouldn't have even been a warrior yet.
"Okay. Shouldn't be too bad," Sunpaw replied, trying to not show his uneasiness. He knew he was on the bigger side, so he gently put his paw forward, testing how thick it was before moving forward. It seemed alright for the first few steps, until Sunpaw found himself slipping and falling forward onto his face. There was a small crack in the ice. "Cactusheart! My bad! Now what? Is it safe?"

Cactusheart nodded. "Cats cross it every day, I'd be surprised if you fell through," he said, he watched as Sunpaw gingerly stepped onto the ice. He took a few steps before slipping and falling forward. "You should be fine, just try not to put too much weight in one area," he told him, it shouldn't be hard for him to get up but apprentices differed on how fast they learned to cross the stream. "Use your claws to grip the ice when you walk." it usually helped younger cats it gave them a sense of balance. Some cats didn't learn to cross the ice during their apprenticeship and when the ice was thick enough were required to join in on an apprentice ice crossing training session, it wasn't uncommon for this to happen and at the beginning of leaf-bare it wasn't an uncommon site to see older cats practicing on the ice. He was glad that he wouldn't have to train him to walk on the ice a few moons after he was a warrior he always thought the mentors and their ex-apprentices looked very awkward as they trained. My claws! Why hadn't I thought about that! Sunpaw scolded himself as he unsheathed his claws. He gripped his claws and slowly pushed himself up. He gave his pelt a quick shake to get rid of the ice. Once again, he would slowly test the thickness, making sure the ice would be able to support his weight. After a few adjustments to his route and a couple of little slips, the apprentice had safely made it to the other side.
"How was that Cactusheart?" Sunpaw called, relieved that the crossing was over with. He was hoping for some praise, thinking he did a decent job for his first time. Now he planned to watch his mentor make his way across and observe how he did it for future reference. This was something he wanted to master as soon as possible, so he could focus on more interesting things.

Cactusheart watched as Sunpaw made his way across the ice, it wasn't too bad for his first time crossing, it was certainly better than his own first time. "Very good." He said. Cactusheart walked onto the ice, he kept his claws sheathed as her was good at balancing now and very careful. Each couple of steps he put one of his paws out and pound on the ice to see if it was thick enough to walk on. Cactusheart finished crossing, he felt the frozen grass crunch under his paws. "That's enough ice training for today," he said, they should probably focus on fighting since most apprentices did fairly well with catching fish. "We're going to practice fighting in a nearby clearing," he told him. There was a clearing that technically belonged to them, it was small and there was almost never any prey but both Thrushclan and Dogclan trained near there, it was more neutral land than anything else. Sunpaw watched his mentor make his was towards him, using his claws and carefully testing the ice every few steps. He made sure to observe how Cactusheart was very careful and didn't get ahead of himself, and made sure to practice that the next time he needed to cross the ice.
The apprentice's ears perked up as Cactusheart told him they would now practice fighting. That was Sunpaw's favorite thing, it made him feel strong and confident. Although he still had much to learn, Sunpaw believed he was doing fairly well in this part of his training. "Great. My favorite part of training," the tom meowed. "What exactly are we practicing today?" he asked curiously.
