Wavecrash had not planned on having her kits in Leafbare. It was an odd thing, of course. What did she expect if she became pregnant in Leaf-Fall? But, the fact remained, she'd held a frail hope that her kits would be born in Newleaf. Kits born in Leafbare were always... bad. It was a horrible thought, but all through her pregnancy, she'd worried if kits were really what she was meant to do. If she would love them. If they would love her. So far, all these kits had caused her were pain and swelling. So, Wavecrash, obviously, had never planned to have them in Leafbare. But, here the queen was, her sleek black pelt matted to her skin as she awoke to a shockwave of pain and a horrible wetness. Ah yes -- kitting. Her brutal yowl of pain was to be expected, causing everyone else in the den save the deaf kits to wake. Queens quickly soothed their young ones back to sleep, telling them to ignore her sounds, while they protected their own litters. Her yowls died down into painful whimpers as others tried to help. It was the elder Rockheart, with his massive form and jagged pelt, who slunk in to help her. He silently gave her a stick to bite down on and lumbered off to scrape together some borage and cobwebs. Unfortunately, that was the extent of his medical knowledge. So, it would be a rough birth, it seemed, as her first kit entered the world. A blue and white tom, tiny and fragile, but hers. syd

It was cold. That was the first thing the tiny kit felt as he entered the world, and he quickly expressed his discomfort by letting out several loud mews. He frantically reached his little paws out for his mother in search of warmth and comfort.
Sunpaw heard the yowling from the queen's den and immediately rolled his eyes. He was trying to get some sleep after his morning training session, but that was short lived. The tom's annoyance grew as the clan's medicine cat saw him awake outside of the apprentice's den and asked for some help with the kitting. He wasn't allowed to say no, so he grudgingly followed them into the den with some cobwebs. He had no idea what to do. I could never be a medicine cat Sunpaw thought to himself.
"Jeez. Can you be any louder?" the apprentice hissed, wincing as the first kit appeared, squirming around desperately.

Rockheart was still standing guard at the entrance to the den, like he always did when a queen was kitting. He lightly cuffed the apprentice over the ears. "She's in pain," he rumbled, sounding much like falling boulders, though he had to breathe every few words. "Mind the queens, Sunpaw... you might mentor one of these kits someday."Wavecrash, however, was already fussing over the first kit. She drew him close to her belly, her heart swelling with pride. Her... her kit. Her son, she thought, beginning to purr. That is, until the next wave of pain hit. This one seemed to hurt more than the last, and while her first kit surely needed cleaning... the second, who was much quieter and much smaller looked like his pretty white fur had been dipped in blood. Her eyes flickered with fear. Was she going to die here? As another wave of pain tore through her, she wasn't sure. --- The little kit pressed up to his mother's belly at her urging, his bloody fur rubbing up against his brother's. None of it was his own, and now he was shivering at his side. The little one was cold, and the wetness was not helping. Nighttime chill mixed with the bitter winds of Leafbare did not make for healthy kits. syd

Sunpaw huffed, knowing he needed to respect an elder's warning. He was right, these kits would eventually become clan members. But at the moment, they looked weak. As gross as it was, Sunpaw couldn't help but stare at the newest kit who had come out in a pool of blood.
"Does she need anything else? Something I can go look for?" the apprentice asked Rockheart, hoping to get out of the den, even if it was for a brief moment.
The tiny kit was comforted by his mother as she drew him closer to her stomach. He was still fussing around, but starting to become aware of his new life.
